Transitioning to the Melbourne Model in the School of Medicine

As the University moves to the Melbourne Model, our six year undergraduate degree (MBBS/BMedSc) and four and a half year graduate degree (MBBS) will be phased out and replaced with a new four year postgraduate degree, the Doctor of Medicine (MD), which will begin in 2011.

The Doctor of Medicine will consist of one year on-campus study in the biosciences and three years in clinical schools.

The timeline for change is:

  • 2008 - final intake for school leavers into MBBS/BMedSc
  • 2009 - final intake for graduates into MBBS (applications have now closed)
  • 2010 - no intake
  • 2011 - first intake into the new Doctor of Medicine

Selection

Selection into the Doctor of Medicine will require:

  • A completed undergraduate degree
  • At least one semester long subject (12.5 points) at second year level or above in each of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry
  • Completion of GAMSAT for local applicants and either GAMSAT or MCAT for international applicants
  • Satisfactory performance in a multi mini interview (MMI)

Quotas and fee types

The numbers of places in the Doctor of Medicine will be consistent with the current intake into the MBBS/BMedSci and MBBS at 330 per year. We expect the mix of CSP, Australian fee and international students to be the same as for the current cohort.

Pathways

There are two pathways from undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne. The Bachelor of Biomedicine is the tailored route with integrated studies in human biology. These integrated studies will meet all the prerequisite requirements for further study in Medicine, Dentistry and Physiotherapy.

The Bachelor of Science is an equally valid pathway but students are required to ensure they choose the appropriate subjects to meet the prerequisite requirements.

Students from other degrees or universities will need to ensure that they include the prerequisite subjects in their degree. Please contact us if you need further advice on this.

Guaranteed entry

School leavers enrolling in the Bachelor of Biomedicine or Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne will be guaranteed a place in the Doctor of Medicine as follows:

  • A Commonwealth Supported Place is guaranteed for students with an ENTER of 99.90 or higher
  • An Australian or international full fee place is guaranteed for students with an ENTER of 99.0 or higher

These guaranteed places are subject to:

  • An achieved average grade of H2A (75%). The H2A will count as satisfying the GPA requirement for entry
  • Meeting the subject prerequisite requirements
  • Students will also be required to satisfactorily complete the interview to ensure their communication skills are adequate for competent health practice
  • Places being available (clinical placement capacity is the limiting factor)

Students using the guaranteed place pathway will not be required to complete GAMSAT or MCAT.
