Doctor of Medical Science

The Doctor of Medical Science (DMedSc) is a higher research doctorate offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to medical graduates of the University of Melbourne and other recognised universities.

Students enrolled in the MD should note that rules and regulations relating to the Doctor of Medical Science also govern the teaching out of the Doctor of Medicine degree.

Enrolment Options

There are two distinctly different enrolment options available in the Doctor of Medical Science:

1. Enrolled Candidature based on research undertaken during the period of enrolment resulting in the submission of a thesis which is externally examined.

OR

2. Submission of a compilation of published papers. Such papers would be the result of research undertaken prior to enrolment. Such research must not have been undertaken as an enrolled student at this or any other university.

Applicants for the Doctor of Medical Science by compilation of published papers are required to seek and obtain in-principle approval from the Head of the relevant department prior to submitting the application form. Applicants for this stream are not enrolled as students until the date of submission of the compilation of published papers for examination. As such, the relationship with the department and the Faculty is that of applicant, not enrolled student. The application for entry to this stream should be submitted approximately 12 months prior to the compilation being ready for submission.

International applicants for this stream are advised that entry to the country is not required however it is normally expected that a demonstrable relationship with the department through which you are applying has been well established prior to submission of the compilation for examination.
