Medical alumniThe School of Medicine was established in 1862 and is the oldest medical school in Australia. The first two graduates of the medical school were Patrick Moloney and William Carey Rees in 1867. Our graduates include two Nobel laureates: (Frank) Macfarlane Burnet (1899-1985) who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1960 and John Eccles (1903-1997) who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1963. Today, more than 250 students graduate in medicine from the University of Melbourne each year. Over a quarter of our graduating students are international. The medical alumni professional network is extensive and each year many graduates get in touch with each other through class reunions. Stay in touch—the University of Melbourne Medical SocietyThe University of Melbourne Medical Society (UMMS) provides medical graduates with an opportunity for active, continuing links with the School of Medicine and the university as well as a means of staying in touch with former classmates. Members of UMMS are invited to an annual medical alumni function and lecture held towards the end of each year. Membership is free and renewable annually.
