Assessment (Universitas Indonesia)

Assessment of the AMS program for Universitas Indonesia (UI) students is as follows:

Coursework: 25 - 50 pts

  • Introduction to Biomedical Sciences (Bridging Program) 12.5 points
  • Advanced Critical Appraisal of the Medical Literature 10 points
  • Research in Progress Seminar 2.5 points
  • Research Methods (Quantitative or Qualitative) 12.5 points (dependent on unit)
  • One other coursework subject 12.5 points (dependent on unit)
  • Project knowledge Exam

Assessment of coursework elements will be according to the assessment described for that subject. Supervisors may require you to take additional tuition. Any requests must be authorised by the AMS Office.

Research: 50 - 75 pts

You will be required to submit an individual written report of your research. Some units may include a supervisor's evaluation and/or require you to give an oral presentation on your work.

The maximum report length for the research component will be as stated in the unit description (unless otherwise specified by the unit or the AMS coordinators).

Advanced Critical Appraisal of Medical Literature

An initial part of your research training will be to develop critical thinking skills and to evaluate and compare information from a wide variety of sources. This task will require you to select, in consultation with your supervisor, three articles from your discipline area and then critically analyse them. These articles can be classical/seminal papers, methodological developments, current "hot" or topical issues, comparison of meta-analysis studies or comparison of methodological issues. Your appraisal is to be no more than 3000 words. More details will be given during the AMS year.

Note: Plagiarism is not acceptable under any circumstances. For more information, please see: www.services.unimelb.edu.au/plagiarism/

For due dates please look up the important dates for your cohort.

Students need to submit THREE hard copies of their appraisal to:

AMS Administrator
Medical Education Unit (MEU)
Room N715, Level 7, North Wing, Medical Building
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences
The University of Melbourne
Vic 3010 Australia

and ONE electronic copy on CD Rom or disk to the address above.

Please note: Late submission of critical appraisals and research reports will incur a penalty. An initial penalty of 5% applies to any submission after the due date, and a further 1% for every additional day beyond 3 days late.

Research in Progress Seminar

Oral communication is an important aspect of research knowledge transfer. The ability to clearly and succinctly present your ideas and prognosis on your project is vital if you are to actively participate with your research community. To provide you with experience in this, you will be required to present a 15 minute oral presentation to your peers and members of the AMS team, outlining your progress to date. You will not necessarily need to present results but you will need to briefly describe your project, what has been accomplished to date and what remains to be done. More details will be provided during the AMS year.

Project Knowledge Exam

In order to test your knowledge and understanding of your research project, a one hour examination will be hled in early December. It will consist of five questions in which you will need to describe, amongst other things, the background of your project, its aims and objectives. You will not be allowed to take any material into the exam nor communicate with the other students. This task is a hurdle requirement (ie you must pass the exam if you are to continue your AMS studies in semester 2). You will not be awarded a specific mark - you either "pass" or "fail" the exam . More details will be provided in the first semester of the AMS year.
