Overall Objectives

This unit aims to provide students with an understanding of all aspects of clinical research within an emergency setting. Students will work within the Royal Brisbane Emergency Department, which incorporates a full range of tertiary-referral services including trauma, resuscitation, acute care, and mental health. Students will be required to:

  1. Critically evaluate medical literature and identify gaps in literature that require further research
  2. Design original research in emergency medicine
  3. Carry out and communicate results of original research in emergency medicine
  4. Understanding the barriers to high quality clinical research in emergency medicine

Content

Coursework:
Students should undertake Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Melbourne University. Further, students will be required to attend in-house training provided to interns. This comprises approximately 80 hours of structured emergency medicine coursework across 10 weeks. All major emergency medicine topics are covered. No formal assessment occurs within this course.

Research:
General research areas conducted in the department include sepsis, procedural sedation, trauma and medical education.

Sample Research Topics:

Triage of older patients in major trauma: This project examines whether older trauma patients are under-triaged compared to younger trauma patients and whether this under-triage is associated with poorer outcomes.

Evaluation of a new Massive Transfusion Protocol for exsanguinating trauma patients: This project examines whether a newly implemented massive transfusion protocol is effective in reducing coagulopathy and mortality in major trauma patients.

Development of a Sepsis registry: this project involves collecting clinical data on all emergency department patients admitted to the hospital with suspected infection. This data will be used to identify early indicators of mortality in sepsis patients.
