Overall Objectives


•  Introduce students to the principles of adult learning and practice of research in the area of medical education

•  Enhance research skills through the design and implementation of a supervised independent research project

•  Enhance skills of critical appraisal & oral and written communication

•  Introduce the role that information and communications technologies (ICTs) can be used to support medical education and clinical practice

Content


Coursework: Students will undertake one of the following subjects: Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics OR Qualitative Health Research at the commencement of their AMS year.

Participation in departmental meetings/seminars will be expected. Students will also be nominated for committee positions as appropriate within the Melbourne Health organisation

Research: The Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School coordinates the teaching program for over 250 medical students. Teaching at the Clinical School is underpinned by a number of educational theories and processes. Research would be undertaken in areas that range from studying education methodologies to that of the role of information technology in the learning process or clinical practice. Students would have access to academic staff at the Clinical School , the Multimedia Unit (FMHS) and Senior Medical Staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Sample Research Topics:

•  Student barriers to patient contact within a large Metropolitan hospital

•  Role of information technology in managing student timetables, logistics and student contact – reviewing the CATS system

•  Evaluation of an Electronic Learning Portfolio for undergraduate students

•  Usage of Information and Communication Technologies in the undergraduate Clinical School environment

•  Review of Learning Management Systems e.g. Topclass/Blackboard in the medical curriculum

•  Evaluation of medical records in a primary care environment and whether there is a need to train students in the usage of the electronic health record (EHR)

Research Component: 87.5 points
Research Report (up to 9,000 words): 80%
Oral presentation: 10%
Supervisor's Evaluation: 10%

Coursework Component: 12.5 points
Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics or Qualitative Health Research will be assessed as per subject description.
