Overall Objectives


To provide a comprehensive introduction to clinical and research aspects of diabetes. In addition to initiate, collate and report a study of the clinical and immune features of autoimmune diabetes.

Content


Coursework: Model of Chronic Disease Management exemplified by Diabetes.
Students will be required to attend weekly clinic sessions and occasional ward rounds as part of their clinical diabetes teaching along with patient recruitment.
Students will be expected to learn about the clinical aspects of Diabetes and its management and be prepared for the final written examination.
The final written examination will assess the student's understanding on both clinical and research aspects of diabetes.

Research: The student will receive research methods training. Area studied will be clinical and immune features of autoimmune diabetes.

Sample Research Topics:

  1. Studies of Immune and Metabolic Features and prevalence of Adult onset Type 1 Diabetes in Europe, China and Iran.
  2. A study of Epigenetics of type 1 diabetes using identical twins.
  3. A study of Monocyte specific changes in Identical Twins Discordant for Diabetes.

  4. All of the above projects will require clinical involvement, clinical data accrual, as well as some Laboratory based analysis of selected components.

Assessment Breakdown


Research Component: 75 points
Research Report (8000-9000 words): 85%
Supervisor Evaluation: 15%

Coursework Component: 25 points
Model of Chronic Disease Management exemplified by Diabetes will be assessed by 6 hours of written examination and two written assignments of 1500 words each.
