Overall Objectives

This course is designed to:

  • Teach students the principles of a well-designed research project, thus enabling critical assessment of biomedical literature in any area
  • Demonstrate to students the importance of good quality research in the development of improved clinical practice
  • Assist students in the design and implementation of a research project, from the concept stage through to formal written and oral presentations

At the conclusion of this course, students will have presented their original research findings at a local or national scientific meeting, and have their findings published in a recognised medical journal.

Coursework: Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Research: A clinical research project will be performed under the supervision of the members of the Institute of Breathing and Sleep / Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. The research topic may be chosen from the list below or may be one of interest to the student. IBAS and the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine are very active in the area of clinical research, with several post-graduate medical, science and allied health students from the Universities of Melbourne, Latrobe and Swinburne working in our Department. Each student has at least two close supervisors, as well as regular contact with other researchers in the Department. This is both formally at our weekly Unit meetings and fortnightly research meetings, as well as informally. Our main areas of research are listed below, but we are interested in all topics to do with the health of the lung, including breathing during sleep.
We encourage interested students to contact us, discuss their interests and visit our Department.

Sample Research Topics:

There are a large number of research projects offered by the Breathing & Sleep Unit.
