Overall Objectives


This unit is designed to:
  • provide an introduction to the process and practice of research in the area of paediatric health
  • encourage a broad understanding of the role of research in the development of clinical practice
  • ensure a critical understanding of biomedical literature

Coursework: N/A, However, students will be encouraged to audit NUS-organized courses that may be relevant to their research project.

Research:

Clinical Research

  • Prevalence of uveitis in Asian patients with juvenile chronic arthritis.
  • Improving dialysis outcomes in children and adolescents.
  • Ambulatory blood pressure changes in children, adolescents and young adults with diabetes mellitus and its correlations with albuminuria

Clinical/Laboratory Research

  • Shellfish allergy in the tropics and cross-reactivity with dust mite.
  • Genetics of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome.
  • Immunopathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome.
  • The role of polymorphisms of the Multi-drug resistance-1 (MDR-1) gene and early response to therapy in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
  • Genetic determinants for neutropaenic sepsis in children with leukaemia.
  • Gut microflora patterns in allergic and non-allergic children.
  • Genetics of pre-eclampsia / pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Laboratory Research

  • Novel strategies for single cell preimplantation genetic diagnosis.
  • Universal aneuploidy analysis in preimplantation genetic screening.
  • Transposon technology for transgenesis and gene discovery.
  • Novel molecular diagnostics for dynamic mutation disorders.
  • Determining the SCN5A haplotype frequencies in the Singaporean population and their association with sudden cardiac death.
  • Mutation screening of the serum amyloid protein A gene for genetic variants associated with dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis
