Overall Objectives
- To understand the principles of designing and implementing a valid research project in the Emergency Department environment
- To develop a null hypothesis
- To perform a literature search
- To prepare a human research ethics committee submission and understand the processes required for ethics approval in the clinical environment
- To become familiar with aspects of research method including sampling, power calculations, bias, blinding and data collection etc
- To become competent in common IT programmes used in research, including Access, Excel, and familiar with stats packages such as SPSS, Graph pad, Stata etc.
- To perform appropriate statistical analyses on data collected, including calculations of p values and confidence intervals
- To write up results of a project in a scientific but readable manner in preparation for submission to a journal or presentation at a scientific meeting
- To understand the requirements for submitting a potential publication to a referred medical journal

Content
Coursework: The two components are:
1. Satisfactory Completion of Epidemiology/Biostats unit (offered by School of Population Health).
2. Attendance at 30 hours of education sessions provided by the emergency department or hospital (covering EBM, short cases, CME) & submission of an associated log-book.
Research: This will be based at St. Vincent campus in the Department of Emergency Research. Projects will be clinical, public health, and epidemiological research associated with emergency department attendances.
The primary research focus of the department chronic disease and public health with a particular focus on Type 2 diabetes. However various clinical and non-clinical projects relating but not limited to medical education, mental health, safety, and health services issues may be considered.

Research Component: 75 points
Research Report (up to 7500-8,000 words): 70%
Oral presentation and poster: 15%
Supervisor Evaluation: 15%
Coursework Component: 25 points
Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics, assessed as per subject description: 12.5 points
Attendance at Intern and/or Registrar Education Sessions will be assessed by satisfactory completion of a log book recording attendance at education sessions.
