Overall Objectives

Students will receive general training in laboratory practice and experience in a defined area of laboratory-based research. The student will learn how to function within an active research team, design experiments, collect and analyse experimental data, critically assess work in the literature, improve their oral and written communication skills, and learn technology relevant to their project. A senior member of the research group will supervise each student. After one year, the student will have written a detailed report and, if of satisfactory quality, submitted their results for publication and presentation at a national meeting.

Coursework: N/A

Research: The mission of the Section is to develop and advance new therapies for disease. It draws upon the skills of basic scientists and clinicians with expertise in apoptosis, molecular biology, cell biology, histopathology, animal physiology, toxicology, clinical investigation and risk assessment. The Section comprises four main research groups (Cardiovascular Group, Apoptosis Group, Toxicology Group, Protein Biochemistry and Biomarker Group). In addition, embedded in the Section is the Department of Health Toxicology Unit. The Section also has a major responsibility for the Sir John McMichael Centre for Clinical Investigation and Research located in the Hammersmith Hospital.

Sample Research Topics:

  1. Effects of erythropoietin on endothelial progenitor cell function
  2. Endothelial progenitor cells in pulmonary arterial hypertension
  3. Polymorphism of the GTP-cyclohydrolase I (GCH1) gene in pulmonary hypertension
  4. Identification and measurement of putative biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases
  5. Screen for apoptosis-regulating genes

Detailed descriptions of topics are available.
