Overall Objectives


This unit aims to provide the student with research and clinical experience in the area of rehabilitation. To develop research skills, the student will critically evaluate the literature in a specific area, participate in regular seminars, conduct a specific research project including collection and/or analysis of data and assist with research activities within the Centre. To gain clinical experience and understand the role of the doctor in the rehabilitation team, the student will be provided with the opportunity to attend clinical sessions at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. The overall outcomes for the student are to learn quantitative research skills, to enhance verbal and written communication skills, to appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of rehabilitation and to expand his/her knowledge within this area of health practice.

Coursework: N/A

Research: Research can be undertaken in a number of areas relevant to rehabilitation. These include:
  • Postural control
  • Gait and mobility
  • Upper limb function
  • Spinal cord injury

Students are encouraged to discuss the unit with the supervisor directly for further information.
Consideration will only be given to students who have made direct contact with the supervisor.

Sample Research Topics:

  1. Walking across the lifespan
  2. Muscle stiffness reduction in healthy and pathological populations
  3. Balance control during walking after stroke
  4. The effect of vigorous exercise in people with Parkinson's Disease
  5. Sensorimotor integration in people with central or peripheral nervous system injury
  6. What is the effect of secondary elbow, wrist and hand surgery for children with Obstetric Brachial Plexus Palsy?
  7. The effect of vibration training on the macro-architecture of bone and blood flow in spinal cord injured individuals

Assessment Breakdown


Research Component: 100 points
Research Report (up to 10,000 words): 75%
Oral presentation (30 min): 10%
Supervisor's Evaluation: 15%
Compulsory attendance at seminars (hurdle requirement)
