Overall Objectives

Our Department is a large and busy clinical department actively involved in research. The student should expect a good grounding in the theory and practice of research and an in depth exposure to a clinical Medical Specialty including hands on procedural experience. Patient simulators will be used for experience in Emergency procedures. By the time you join us we will have hosted more than 15 students.

Coursework: The coursework allows an in depth study of a clinical Specialty which demonstrates Physiology and Pharmacology "in action". The coursework is delivered as 10 Modules and has a strong clinical basis. The theory is backed up by 2 clinical in-theatre sessions with your Mentor. Each student will be allocated a trainee anaesthetist as a mentor. The student is expected to maintain a Logbook of clinical interaction. Commonly performed procedures as required by Interns will be taught during Mentor sessions.
Students also undertake the coursework subject Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Research: The research will encompass aspects of clinical anaesthesia and pain management and may have a clinical, laboratory, audit or anatomical basis. Each student will become involved with an individual research project. This project will be supplied by the Department and tailored to fit the time available. Each student will be supported and supervised by an experienced Anaesthetist who will have responsibility for guiding the project and will be backed up by a registrar Mentor. AMS desk space and computer access is supplied as is additional statistical support [if required].
