Overall Objectives


The Neuropsychiatry Unit is a statewide clinical service which provides neuropsychiatric assessment and treatment for patients with psychiatric illness and comorbid neurological or medical conditions. The aims of the unit will be:

  • To provide an introduction to clinical neuropsychiatry and an understanding of the process of assessment and treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions.
  • To develop an understanding of the research and methodological issues in this clinical population.
The Neuropsychiatry Unit and the Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Research and Academic Unit, Sunshine Hospital (see Cognitive Neuropsychiatry entry) have recently come together to form the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre

Content


Coursework: Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Research: The major component of this course will be a clinical research project performed under the supervision of members of the Unit in the area of clinical neuropsychiatry.
Participation in departmental meetings / seminars will be encouraged.

Sample Research Topics:

  1. The role of neuroimaging in clinical neuropsychiatry
  2. Predictive testing in Huntington's disease; clinical and ethical issues.
  3. Development of a neuropsychiatric rating scale for clinical use

Research Component: 87.5 points
Research Report (up to 9,000 words): 75%
Oral Presentation: 10%
Supervisor's Evaluation: 15%

Coursework Component: 12.5 points
Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics, assessed as per subject description.
