Overall Objectives


This course is designed to:
  • provide an introduction to the process and practice of research in the area of paediatric (neonatal, child and adolescent) health
  • encourage a broad understanding of the role of research in the development of clinical practice
  • ensure a critical understanding of biomedical literature

Content


Coursework: A comprehensive epidemiological and biostatisical support program will be run through the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU) situated at the Royal Children's Hospital. The year long course will include fortnightly AMS group meetings, courses in ethics, study design, handling data, biostatistics methods, use of statistical software and report writing.
Attendance in this course is an integral part of the AMS year in the Paediatric Unit.
Other courses may be selected at the discretion of the individual project supervisor and student.

Research: The major component of this course will be a clinical, laboratory, population health or educational research project performed under the supervision of members of the department in a range of areas of paediatric health care including (but not limited to) infectious diseases, congenital conditions, asthma and allergy, emergency and surgical care, issues in adolescent health.
Students will also be expected to attend departmental meeting and seminars.
