Overall Objectives

This unit is designed to:

  • Introduce students to the principles of adult learning and the processes and practice of research in education with particular application to medical education
  • Enhance research skills through the design and implementation of a supervised independent research project
  • Enhance skills of critical appraisal and oral and written communication

Content


Research: Most doctors engage in teaching in one of its many different forms. The combination of research and coursework in this unit will give students a thorough grounding in current educational theory and research. The coursework will assist students to gain an understanding of the educational theories and processes used in medical and clinical education in order to understand why particular methods are used in different teaching situations. The research possibilities are varied, with access to the academic staff of the Medical Education Unit, and could range from the design and evaluation of learning tasks, to an investigation of clinical teaching.

Participation in departmental meetings/seminars will be expected.
