Overall Objectives
This course is designed to:
- provide an introduction to ophthalmic research covering a broad range of areas of interest from epidemiological research through laboratory-based ocular genetics to curriculum research
- encourage a broad understanding of the role of clinical research in ophthalmology and the development of clinical practice
- ensure a critical understanding of biomedical literature.

Content
Coursework: Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics OR Qualitative Health Research as appropriate to the project selected.
Research: The course will be based on research projects performed under the supervision of members of the Department in one of the areas outlined below.
Participation in departmental meetings/seminars will be expected
Sample Research Topics:
- Aetiology of age-related macular degeneration
- Needs analysis in undergraduate ophthalmic curriculum
- Burden of eye disease
- Cost effectiveness of eye screening to detect glaucoma
- Genetic causes of eye disease
