Overall Objectives


This course is designed to:

  • provide an introduction to ophthalmic research covering a broad range of areas of interest from epidemiological research through laboratory-based ocular genetics to curriculum research
  • encourage a broad understanding of the role of clinical research in ophthalmology and the development of clinical practice
  • ensure a critical understanding of biomedical literature.

Content


Coursework: Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics OR Qualitative Health Research as appropriate to the project selected.

Research: The course will be based on research projects performed under the supervision of members of the Department in one of the areas outlined below.

Participation in departmental meetings/seminars will be expected

Sample Research Topics:

  1. Aetiology of age-related macular degeneration
  2. Needs analysis in undergraduate ophthalmic curriculum
  3. Burden of eye disease
  4. Cost effectiveness of eye screening to detect glaucoma
  5. Genetic causes of eye disease

Research Component: 87.5 points
Research Report (up to 9,000 words): 85%
Supervisor's evaluation: 15%

Coursework Component: 12.5 points
Intermediate Epidemiology and Biostatistics, OR Qualitative Health Research, assessed as per subject description.
