Information for Project Supervisors

As a project supervisor, you should maintain good contact with your Unit Coordinator to ensure that you both have a clear understanding of the nature of the projects you are responsible for. You are strongly urged to become familiar with the unit description applicable to your students through this website.

The primary responsibility of a Project Supervisor is to ensure that the student is on track and receiving adequate support in the conduct of their research project. Specifically, supervisors should be meeting students on a regular basis, at a minimum of once every two weeks.

AMS Project Supervisors should follow students' progress by:

  • Regularly reviewing their recent progress, activities and results and providing feedback.

  • Ensuring they have a plan for the following few weeks.
  • Helping them deal with any barriers to progress.
  • Ensuring the pace of their progress will meet the AMS deadlines. See Progress Report.
  • Ensuring the continuity of supervision unless otherwise agreed to in writing.
  • Notifying the AMS Administrator of any extended absence by a student or unsatisfactory progress.

There are other administrative responsibilities that are part of any supervisor's normal role in an organisation. These include:

  • Providing a safe research environment for the students and complying with all applicable Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations for your workplace. Click here for safety information for AMS project supervisors.

  • Notifying us as soon as practicable of any accident, serious illness, emergency situation or similar circumstance affecting any of the students.

Unit Coordinators and Project Supervisors are also expected to nominate suitable examiners for student projects.

Problems with Supervision

Should you experience difficulty with supervision supervisors should first approach their AMS Unit Coordinator. If the problem cannot be resolved at an "internal" level, supervisors/AMS Unit Coordinators are asked to contact the AMS Coordinator, A/Prof Stephen Farish.
