Report Format and Submission

Format

Each student needs to submit THREE hard copies of their research report.

The research report:

  • Should be on A4 size paper
  • Must have clearly and consecutively numbered pages with a uniform page margin (minimum 2cm)
  • Must be typed in a standard, clearly legible font (New Times Roman or Arial recommended). Narrative text should also be double-spaced and be a minimum size of 12-point
  • Must have a consistent citation style -

There is no specific rule dictating which referencing style AMS students must use, as long as referencing is done in one, consistent style throughout your report.  Harvard and Vancouver are popular and relevant styles for AMS project, however, please check with your supervisor which style would be most appropriate for the content of your report.

  • Should be submitted in some form of binding (wiro, plastic spiral, or thermal)

  • Must include a statement declaring the contributions of the candidate to the report work, explicitly indicating the contributions of others to the report, including provision of experimental data, statistical advice and assistance with writing. Please note that collaboration and obtaining pertinent advice is appropriate. Note: Plagiarism is not acceptable under any circumstances. For more information, please see: http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/plagiarism/
  • Must include a signed and dated statement on the reverse side of the cover sheet from the student supervisor, declaring: "This research project has been approved and is ready for submission."
  • Must have a title page showing the following:

    1. The student's full name and ID number
    2. The subject title: Advanced Medical Science
    3. The title of the topic under investigation
    4. Supervisor's full name
    5. The AMS unit code and title
    6. The month and year of submission
**An electronic copy of your report must also be submitted via LMS by 4.30pm of the report submission day:
  • The file MUST have the page size set at A4 (not Letter) and be in one full PDF document.

Examples of Previous Research Reports

There are a number of previous AMS students' Research Reports available to view on this website.

Word Count

The required length of your research report can be found in the relevant Unit Description. This is a guide to the length of your report, and does not include:

  • Abstract
  • Contents
  • Appendices
  • Tables
  • References

Clearly there may be instances where it is necessary to exceed this limit, however, this should not be the norm. If your report is too verbose, you may be marked down.

Your report may be single sided or double sided. Many examiners prefer single sided, as this gives them space to write comments on your report.

Submission

Candidates must discuss preparation and the format of the report with their supervisor. A draft of the report should be presented to the supervisor at least one-month prior to final submission. The AMS Office will request that supervisors inform us when they have sighted the draft report.

THREE copies of your final report must be submitted by 1pm on the day of submission (see Important Dates for your cohort).

Late submission of research reports will incur a penalty. An initial penalty of 5% applies to any submission after the due date, and a further 1% for every additional day beyond 3 days late.

Overseas/Interstate Students

Students undertaking AMS interstate or overseas should submit their electronic copy via LMS, on or before the submission date.

Overseas students should submit two hard copies by Express International mail postmarked on or before the submission date. The third hard copy is to be handed to your supervisor on the submission date.

Interstate students should submit three hard copies by Express Post postmarked on or before the submission date.
