Safety Information

The University of Melbourne has detailed policies regarding environmental health and safety. It is in reference to some of these policies that we have developed some basic procedures, guidelines and recommendations for both AMS students and supervisors.

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences has also developed its own Environment, Health and Safety website: http://www.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/environment_health_and_safety.

Student Medical Authorisation

A major part of ensuring a student's safety is being able to provide adequate and appropriate supervision. To assist you with this, all AMS students will be required to complete and submit to the AMS Administrator a Medical Information form prior to the commencement of semester 6. This form asks for details of current medications, known medical or physical problems or any other problems of which student supervisors should be aware. Where a potential problem is identified, we will provide AMS project supervisors with the necessary information.

Safety Induction

We expect supervisors to ensure that students undergo a safety induction and any necessary training before commencing their activities. Many of you will already have safety induction and/or training sessions in place.

A standard safety induction would involve the provision of the following:

  • Any departmental/site safety guidelines
  • Details on emergency, fire and evacuation procedures
  • Relevant emergency phone numbers
  • The location of first aid boxes
  • Information on issue resolution procedures (including how to report an accident)
  • Any individual safety training needs (including training for usage of unfamiliar equipment, discussion about any required protective equipment, etc)

Further imporant information regarding student safety off-campus can be located at:http://www.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/environment_health_and_safety/staff_and_student_safety_off_campus

Reporting of Accidents/Incidents

Most AMS host sites will already have established safety measures and procedures. Therefore, it is likely in the event of an incident or accident, you will have your own incident report form to complete. If the accident involves an AMS student, please provide the AMS Administrator with a copy of the report. In the case where no such report is available, we ask that you obtain a copy of the University's Incident Notification (S3) form, and complete and submit it to us accordingly: www.unimelb.edu.au/ehsm/Incident_S3web.pdf and for more details re incident reporting: http://www.pb.unimelb.edu.au/ehs/ehs/incidentreporting/

Risk Management, Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control

University of Melbourne students are encouraged to conduct documented hazard assessments in their work environments in order to identify, assess and control hazards in a systematic way, consistent, relevant and applicable to all University activities.

  • Identify all HAZARDS and analyse their associated PERSONAL SAFETY RISK
  • Identify all ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS and analyse their associated ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
  • Evaluate the relative personal safety risks and environmental impacts using a risk assessment form and prioritise them http://www.pb.unimelb.edu.au/ehs/riskmanagement/
  • Minimise the personal safety risks and environmental impacts by using the hierarchy of controls method.

Guidelines regarding the identification, assessment and control of hazards may be found at: http://www.unimelb.edu.au/ehsm/3.html#3.1 . See also the relevant MDHS webpage on Risk Management: http://www.pb.unimelb.edu.au/ehs/riskmanagement/ for relevant checklists and assessment forms.

For students who are undertaking research in areas with a high prevalence of HIV or in an HIV-risk working environment, the STUDENT INFECTIOUS DISEASE GUIDE must be reviewed by students and supervisors. If applicable, please complete and submit the front page form to the AMS office ASAP: http://www.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/files/mdhs/ehs/O8%20student%20ID%20Guide%20v2.pdf
