Going Overseas

All AMS units will be provided with the same funding to help cover their cost of hosting your placement, regardless of location. There are no additional funds to cover expenses related to distance. Therefore, if you are contemplating an interstate/overseas placement, remember that you will need to cover all related (living) costs (airfare, accommodation, meals, etc).

For students intending to travel overseas, please ensure that you are eligible for the relevant visa. Students wanting to undertake an international unit should also consider:

  • Political stability of country (information can be found on the Department of Foreign Affairs website: www.dfat.gov.au ). The university travel policy is informed by DFAT travel warnings. If DFAT recommends reconsidering you need to travel to your chosen destination, you will not be permitted to travel (see the University Travel Policy www.unimelb.edu.au/rmo/travel/index.html). Should DFAT advise exercising a high degree of caution, it is important that you implement a risk management strategy. Contact the AMS office for details.
  • Medical requirements. You should investigate vaccination requirements, and if necessary arrange an appointment with your Doctor in advance of your departure.
  • Adequate travel insurance (not provided by the University of Melbourne ). It is imperative that you take out comprehensive travel insurance so that you are covered for any medical treatment you may require, and for theft/loss of belongings.

All students travelling overseas, either for an entire AMS year, or for a period of International Fieldwork are required to read through AMS Abroad, which provides more detailed information on your responsibilities and the expectations of the university. You should also read the section which provides some invaluable general travel advice.

Students travelling interstate or overseas are reminded that they are representing the University. You may well encounter some cultural and procedural differences, and it is essential that you find out about these in your chosen destination before you travel.

All students wishing to undertake a period of international or local fieldwork, must read and complete the relevant fieldwork form, and return it to the AMS office at least six weeks prior to departure.

PLEASE NOTE: students considering undertaking any AMS overseas unit must have attained at least a 70% weighted average in the medical course from the University of Melbourne.

Students going overseas may be eligible for a Melbourne Abroad Scholarship.
