Becoming an AMS Host
The Medical Course Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences invites departments, affiliated institutes and external/overseas university departments to host students for their AMS year. Interested departments submit a description outlining their proposal for supervising this research year. An "AMS unit" is a research program as defined by one of these proposals. See Setting up a Unit for further details. These units are reviewed and approved by the AMS Task Group. Approved units are then posted on this website in the Unit Descriptions sections, and are thus made available for students to select. All units must adhere to the course structure requirements, and include adequate research methods training.
The academic who submits the AMS unit is designated as the "Unit Coordinator" and is responsible for all the students undertaking the unit they have established
In order to provide quality supervision and adequate contact time for individual students, Unit Coordinators may identify other staff members, usually from their own department or institute, to support them in running the unit. These staff - "AMS Project Supervisors" - have a specific role supervising individual student projects. In some instances, a Unit Coordinator may also be a Project Supervisor for a particular student. For more information about the role of Project Supervisors, please see Research and Supervision.
